Summer?? 2012

Here we are half way through the year already. After one of the wettest and cloudiest starts to May London really turned it on for the last 10 days of the month. Average temperatures were around 25C and blue skies. The Speedo Human Race series went from threatening to cancel their May 27 swim due to frigid temperatures to holding an event in balmy 19C waters. Crazy. June seems to be starting like May, CWC, Cloudy, Wet, Cold.

Still if you have a swim or Tri coming up putting in some hard yards now will help you no end when it comes to race time. If you are only training indoors 19C outdoors will feel frigid, do you think that is going to help your performance? If you are getting a few outdoor swims not only will you be used to all the unique outdoor swimming sensations (not seeing the bottom, ripples on the water, the odd bit of weed) but you’ll also be far more comfortable with the water temperatures. The end result is far less distraction when you’re swimming. I am saying in the politest terms “suck it up and get swimming outdoors, don’t let the weather dictate your training”.

If you are a swimmer or triathlete there is plenty on the horizon to get excited about. Ironman Nice this month, Ironman Zurich in July. The Olympics just around the corner, mark my words there will be some FAST swimming at the Olympics. If you have tickets to any of the swim events, you are going to see some amazing swim battles, world records and certainly history in the making. To ‘recover’ from the Olympics we also have the London Triathlon in September. Throughout this time I will be at the Iconic Tooting Bec Lido helping swimmers prepare for their open water swim event; be it an open water swim race, Triathlon or a swim holiday. Maybe I will see you down there…
